First of all, let me say the obvious. David Pawson is a fine writer as well as highly skilled speaker. But I must disagree with the main theme of this book. I am not saying the book is all bad. In the book, he makes many interesting points. Even though some are wrong, there is definite value for this book. But in my opinion, his overall theology is very wrong. For one thing he says that the Gospel of John was not written for salvation of unbelievers but it is only aimed at those who are already saved. Well, that is a pretty novel idea!! I have not heard anyone expressing such a radical notion about this famous Gospel. If one reads the Gospel with open eyes, it is plain that Jesus is always interacting with unbelievers. And the centering issue is always 'to believe in Him', 'to believe what he is saying', and to put one's trust into the Messiah' and the end result is receiving eternal life. Also in this Gospel we see the standout dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemos about 'being born again'. NEVER do we see Jesus telling a believer to keep on believing for his salvation. So obviously there is something fishy going on here. Why would Pawson suggest such an unlikely hypothesis about this Gospel based on very slim evidence?
Only when one studies his rather unorthodox theology can one understand his motive. Putting simply, this Gospel of John has been a thorn on the side of Pawson's theological view. His reasoning goes like this. He is firmly convinced that repentance is a requirement for salvation. But in this Gospel, repentance is NOT even mentioned! Not even once! So how does he deal with that? Why, the Gospel must not be for salvation of unbelievers!!! This magnificent narrative is only to encourage those who are already saved to stay in their faith!!
In fact, Pawson prefers that the Gospel of John would NEVER be shown to unbelievers because they may get a wrong idea that God may love them and wants to save them!!!
I mean, is this crazy or is this crazy??
But OK, let's stay on his game and let's assume that this Gospel is to be shown only to believers who are already saved. But once again, there is no, not one mention of repentance!!! And in his personal theology, a Christian cannot maintain his salvation without repentance!! So this Gospel cannot help those who are already saved either!!!!
I hope Mr. Pawson reaches the only logical conclusion he can draw. This Gospel of John must disappear and never be seen again! Because it is plainly deficient teaching on salvation to believers and unbelievers alike!! It can only mislead people!!
So, what is wrong with this picture? Mr Pawson is approaching the Bible, not with a humble and open heart, and on his knees, but with his well educated mind already made up! He KNOWS what this Gospel is all about. His brilliant mind firmly believes in his personal theology (very Arminian). That cannot ever be questioned. And he believes he HAS THE KEY to this Gospel and he is going to read the text thru his narrow key hole. For Mr Pawson, that is all there is to the Gospel of John.
I am sure, Mr. Pawson is a fine, fine gentleman and an exemplary Christian disciple. But when it comes to teaching the Bible, this man is clearly a CRACKPOT. People should NOT trust his teaching blindly! Instead, they should approach the Bible themselves with open and reverent hearts and on their knees and let the Bible speak to them!! They may actually find that this Gospel of John leads them to their eternal salvation - as intended by the Holy Spirit. And no, this important and possibly the most central book of the Bible should never be buried but should be read by everyone. Just ignore Mr. Pawson!
